Hoodman Vertical Grip Review for the Nikon D70

After waiting for more than a month, My D70 grip finally arrived, What can i say about it? Wow.. it makes my D70 Look like a monster. The grip gives the D70 an instant face lift. From a small sleek camera to full sized Macho Machine.

The vertical grip gives the D70 a better feel and total balance. It adds weight to the camera which I consider a pro more than a con but if you carry your camera for long trips, you may want to consider the extra weight and if it is really worth it.

The grip improved my hold of the D70 but would suggest that you try it before you decide whether or not you need to get the grip. It is definitely an improvement but not a necessity, I have big hands so it fits well with me.

The fiber optics (included in package) activates the infrared shutter release and can only be used when camera is set to use the infrared remote. Does it Focus when half pressed? No it doesnt, but if you set the focussing to AF-Single, it will focus before it shoots.

    Strengths :
Extends Battery life when used with 2 Batteries.
Better hold and balance for both Vertical and Horizontal Shooting.
    Option of Vertical shutter release.
Can use 6 AA Batteries in case of emergency.

    Weaknesses :
Built: It could have been built better with stronger/heavy duty use material.
Pricey and Delivery Methods is nothing great despite paying for the instant delivery option that i thought would deliver straight to my doorstep.
Vertcal grip makes a strange clicking sound.
Infrared wiring to Sensor is not anchored well and is an accident waiting to happen.

    Wishlist :
    Better Price
    Better vertical release integration.

There are other options of 3rd party grips for the D70 like Jenis, Opteka and Harbortronics. I chose the Hoodman grip because it looked to fit the D70 design better than the other grips.

Should you buy it? Buy it if you think your D70 needs a better feel and total balance, Dont expect the vertical shutter release to be perfect, it works and gives you the option but will not work for fast shooting projects. This is something you will want but not necessarily need. If the Price points were better, I think it would be a good investment.
