Masskara Festival 2008 and 70th Charter Day Anniversary of Bacolod City

Masskara 2008 Coming Soon!

Why am i writing about the Masskara Festival this early? well for one, you guys have to start booking your hotel and tickets… it isnt that easy to go to Bacolod, the crowd seems to get bigger and bigger every year. This year is the 70th Charter Anniversary of the City so expect a lot of balikbayans coming back to celebrate the masskara festival and the Charter day of Bacolod! Note before booking any hotel.. check the route map below and see where your hotel is located. Making sure that it is near the parade route since they close the streets and it is always hard to get a ride.

Masskara news and updates 2008 Bacolod Masskara Festival 2008

There are other festivals coming up and lets not forget that too, The Kadayawan Festival in Davao and the Kagay-an Festival of Cagayan de Oro both happening at the end of the month! Masskara would be on my top list of Festival to visits in the Philippines, Why? well Massakara has a different flavor to it. If you noticed that the other festivals have the same look. The Masskara is full of color and has an almost picture perfect appeal that is unique to Bacolod.

Other Masskara Resources on this site.

It will be my 4th year to shoot the Masskara Festival and definitely not my last! Looking forward to seeing you there!

The Colors of MassKara!

October 17, 2005

It was my first time to visit Bacolod City and shoot the Masskara.. here are a few of my favorite photos

I guess i should start by showing a typical mask..

The term ‘Masskara‘ was derived from the word ‘Mass,’ which means a multitude of people and the Spanish word ‘Kara’ which means face. Thus, Masskara means the “face of the masses.”

From the Sunstar:

THE MassKara Festival began in 1980 amid an overwhelming crises aggravated by the downfall in the prices of sugar in the world market, the heart-breaking mv Don Juan sea tragedy, and the worsening peace and order situation that threatened not just Negros, the Philippines’ sugar capital, but the whole country as a whole.

It was when the situation was so dire and hopeless that the indomitable spirit of the Negrenses emerged, galvanizing the people to overcome the gloom and celebrate life!

Happy grins were then carved in paper mache to hide the despair and grief behind the masks.
Thus, the hope for a brighter tomorrow was born.

When shooting the masskara.. you will meet a few faces and one of them would be Celito..a
vendor/dancer/clown/etc

Will set up the full gallery soon watch out for more! :)

Gear Used:
