* Avoid camera stores in Nathan Road, they give you good prices but when you ask for the unit they only show you the model unit and claim that its the last unit.. when in doubt look for the Hongkong tourism logo seal.. at least that will assure you that they are tourist friendly and you will definitely get good quality and service.

Man Shing and Wing Shing are actually owned by the same owner. I recently had a bad experience at Man Shing. Went there to buy a 72 mm circular polariser. They carry the Hoya, B&W, Minolta and Nikon. Of the four, the Minolta is the only one with a larger rotating ring and easier to use. So I asked to look at the Minolta (which has discontinued their camera line). The salesperson first told me that they have the last one and it has been reserved by another client. Anyway on the pretext of saying he will ask his colleague to ring the client, he took the box to another part of the shop. There, he pasted a new price tag over the old sticker. Later he came back and told me that the client who reserved the filter said he does not want it anymore and so I can buy that one for HK$980. When I got home and peeled off the new stick, the price on the old label was HK$680.

The next day I rang to speak to the manager Mr Chau who said he will look into the matter. Later he rang me to explained that the$680 was for a 55 mm polariser and the one I bought is correctly priced at $980. He said he was sorry for the mixed up. I did not accept his explanation because the same polariser is available online for about US$95 which is around HK$740. Anyway, the salesperson should have been more upfront and explained that the old price label was wrong instead of quietly taking to another part of the shop and sticking on a new label.

Later, the salesperson rang me directly and he was rather impolite at the beginning saying that he did not pressed me to buy the fillter, that I could send it back and how I got him into trouble….etc… This really annoyed me. The manager should not have given him my cell phone number in the first place and he should not call me to complain. I just told him that I would post this incident on the net and that really stopped him on his track and he started to apologize profusely.

I also bought a monopod at the same time. I was looking to buy a Manfrotto 680B but he was quite hard sell on another one called Jenova. I have not heard about Jenova so I asked where is brand was made. He said it is a US brand. Later I found out Jenova is a China company making camera accessories and bag.

The above experience has not be pleasant. I would certainly go to the Tourism Board QTS shop next time. At least the Tourism Board will act on your behalf and u would not get annoying calls from the shop.

i also had an unfortunate incident when trying to buy a compact digital cam in hong kong specifically at cam2 shop at mongkok coz after hours of canvassing throughout hong kong i found they have the cheapest price for the models im considering…i don’t know if it’s my fault or not but as a customer i believe i have the right to know well the product i’m buying as well as the shop i’m buying it from, thus i tried to get the managers opinion about which cam would be better (panasonic zs3 or the casio h10) coz i dont want to regret buying the wrong one..he showed me their main differences and the casio seems to be full featured as opposed to zs3 but i love the lcd display and lens of the zs3 so cant decide immediately which one to get..the shop owner insisted in getting the casio coz its better according to him esp 4 night photos as he showed me but still cant be persuaded much against the zs3 so i asked if they have a brown color for the zs3 but they only have black..i told him i found it hard to decide between the two so ended up talking to him for about 15 minutes and afterwards the one that disgust me the most, he wanted me to get out of the shop cos he think i dont have the money to buy and he mean business i even overheard him saying “why from where are you” but i didnt care coz i was so preoccupied that time..i was very disappointed with such a rude service, dont know if they have the tourism logo in their shop..i felt being discriminated that time (im a southeast asian)..anyway i know it’s maybe my fault thingking to much of which to buy..but i really wanted to buy from them if only the manager where polite or even just being a gentleman that is…so in the end i ended up buying at wing shing (i commend their politeness and friendly service, top notch!atleast from my experience) which i believe have a better offer cos they have international warranty for the zs3 (cam2 shop just hong kong warranty), with just slight price difference so it was a blessing in disguise having dealt with such a racist impudent capitalist at cam2 shop…*(some edits on spelling)
