Ateneo, Royal Netherlands Embassy bring world’s top photo exhibit to Manila

The 2007 World Press Photo Exhibition, an annual traveling exhibition showcasing outstanding news photos, will be shown in Manila for three weeks in May through the sponsorship of the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University (ACFJ) and the Royal Netherlands Embassy.
About 200 photographs comprising the winning photos in the annual World Press Photo competition.will be exhibited in three venues. The show’s first leg is at The Podium, from May 2 – 8. It will then move to the Mall of Asia from May 10 – 16, and then to The Block from May 18 -24.

The World Press Photo competition, the world’s largest and most prestigious annual contest in press photography, has been run by the Amsterdam-based World Press Photo Foundation since 1955. This year’s competition drew 4,448 photographers from 122 countries, submitting a total 83,044 images of last year’s events. An international jury of 13 members screened the entries for 10 award categories such as spot news, environment, sports.

The top award – the World Press Photo of the Year 2006 – was won by Spencer Platt (US) for a photo taken during Israel’s bombing of Lebanon last year. Many pictures that have won this top award have become symbols of world history, such as Charlie Cole’s 1989 photo of a lone demonstrator confronting a line of tanks on Tiananmen Square and Nick Huynh’s 1972 photo of Vietnamese children fleeing a napalm bomb attack.

The annual exhibition is shown each year in about 85 venues in 40 countries, attracting millions of viewers. This year makes the third time the show will come to Manila.
The World Press Photo, an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, was founded in 1955 to foster internationally the work of professional press photographers. In support of the Dutch NGO’s work, the Royal Netherlands Embassy is cooperating with the ACFJ to bring the exhibit to Manila. The ACFJ offers courses to working journalists in Asia with the aim of fostering excellence in journalism. It has pioneered in offering journalism education using online distance education methods. Among its latest offerings is a Diploma in Photojournalism.
