Where to buy your Cameras, Gear and Photographic Equipment in Shanghai, China

April 16, 2009

I was in Shanghai, China recently and couldnt leave without finding a good source of photo equiptment, including lenses, memory cards and possible some studio lights.. this is china and they make everything so there should be some place that sells them right? Thanks to Photographer friend Justin Ventura, now based in Shanghai for further studies and looking for possible work while he is there (if you need a photographer in Shanghai, look him up).

Justin told me to loook for a place, it had 7 floors of all camera related equiptment.. Its like 7 Floors of Hidalgo Stores! It is located at the corner of Xietu Lu corner Luban Lu. Its called Xing Guan Photography Equiptment Building.

From the outside, it looked like any other building, gray and full of billboards outside and when you enter it, youll be surprised to see stores all lined up selling Nikon, Canon, Sony, Leica, Olympus and other camera gear including accessories, bags, memory cards, lighting equipment, lenses, film, medium and large format cameras, Studio lighting, and even wedding dresses for rent for photoshoots.

The Store was divided by Section

  • 1st Floor – Photography Equipment Collections (branded showcases )
  • 2nd Floor – General Photo Equipment and Accesories
  • 3rd Floor – General Photo Equipment and Accesories
  • 4th Floor – Secondhand Camera Photo Studio Articles
  • 5th Floor – Studio lighting equipment and Accesories
  • 6th Floor – Secondhand Camera Wedding Dress (read the sign above!)
  • 7th Floor – Business Center

Here are some of the Shops i found in Shanghai, China with interesting stuff and decent pricing (decent pricing means you should know prices before you go so they dont pull a fast one on you!) I checked prices before i left so more or less i had an inkling of market prices.. Take for example a nikon 35mm F1.8 Would cost around Php12,000 in manila.. the initial price i got converted to peso was around Php 11,500.0o then i decided to go around and explore the place more got the price down to around Php 9,500.. still went around and on the third floor i found the lens at Php 8,500 supposedly without warranty complete with box and all. Did i buy it? nope.. I was just there to check the prices but i did end up buying some Sandisk Extreme III 8GB at Php 2,500 are they fake? I dont think so, I bought it from the Sandisk Dealer and it came with the standard recovery software which i had to register and download from the Sandisk website.
