Photographer’s Dream Mass Media Storage Device – HP MiniNote vs Epson P-5000
June 30, 2008
I was studying the available UMPC products in the market and was inclined to get the ASUS Eee PC but, i decided to beg off and wait a few days more. I wanted to get a UMPC for the portability when travelling for a shoot and being able to work at the same time. My existing laptop is a 15″ macbook pro.. heavy but gets the job done all the time. My only problem is that carrying it around with 2 cameras and a couple of lenses and a suitcase (a total of 3 bags) everytime i leave for some festival can get really tiring.. i need to bring it down to 2 bags (and extra bag for pasalubong!) …
Waiting a few days paid off, when the display of the new HP Mininote came out, tried it out and instantly fell in love with it, (anybody want to buy my Epson P-3000?) The Mininote solves so many issues and hopefully i can increase my productivity while on the go.. I know it isnt a fair comparison but what the heck, if we talking about photographer tools and maximizing work while we are on the go… the HP Mininote wins.. Great tool for bloggers too since there is WIFI and bluetooth, making your 3G phone Handy for Internet anywhere access. There is a lot of realestate With a 8.9′ screen compared to the Epson’s 4′ screen.
The only problem i see is that the Mininote is so versatile for the photographer that people may want to borrow it (your wife or baby may want one of their own too!)

The best thing about the comparison is that the list price estimate for the HP Mininote is P29,990 compared to the Epson P-5000 which is estimated to be around P35,000 in the market. What’s the kicker in the whole deal? The HP gives you 120GB of HD space compared to 80Gb for the Epson P-5000, a really big difference in terms of storage…. now that camera megapixel sizes have increased to 10-16MP on the higher end models.
Running the Windows Vista opens a lot of possibilites (not that I am a fan! OSX Rules!) watching movies or download streaming news and videos is possible.. shooting tethered?(will have to confirm this) Did i mention anything about the webcam? i think i forgot to put it on the side by side comaparison… so now your 3G+yahoo messenger+webcam = live mini broadcast! anywhere and anytime..
There are other options, I chose the HP Mininote for the HD space, the 2Gb ram, the licensed OS, and the fact that it looks like a macbook pro! hahaha
Am sure the other UMPCs available can give you a better deal, but I just feel that the HP fits my needs as a photographer on the go..

… this is not a paid advertisement.. just sharing…

Just when you think the news is out about Photographers fighting to protect their rights online.. here is another copyright violation story about Photos of taken from a flickr account and used in a Cebu Daily.

How did i find out about this? someone posted a link to my story and i was checking the sources of traffic and decided to click on the link and check out what they were saying about my case vs. manila bulletin but instead i find out that another copyright violation has happened.. this time philippine photographers with photos on flickr.. and a Cebu Daily.
“are you aware na ginamit ang pics natin sa isang local newspaper sa cebu?”

What to do? Here is something I wrote on how to deal with someone stealing you photos online..
I think the photographers should unite and fight violations agaisnt our copyright.. how do we do it? I dont know.. a suggestion made by a fellow photographer was to use my case and show up during the first hearing to show that the community of photographers are united against copyright violation against photographers..
any other suggestions are most welcome…
