ALIWAN FIESTA - PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
Contest Mechanics

Backgrounder

Since its inception in 2003, Aliwan Fiesta has gathered the country’s most talented artisans, streetdancers, and a bevy of beauties to represent the best festive traditions from the different regions in a much-awaited annual event at the CCP Complex. The talent, physicality and buoyant performances of its participants leave no doubt as to the creative energy that envelops their everyday lives.

This year, the grand parade takes place on May 3, traversing the length of Roxas Boulevard, and culminating in front of Aliw Theatre where contingents will be judged according to their entries in the streetdance and float competitions, even as their respective muses vie for the title of Reyna ng Aliwan.

Theme

The streetdance competition has become a fierce battleground where color, pomp, and pageantry converge to define the Aliwan Fiesta as grassroots theatre at its very best. With this in mind, Manila Broadcasting has designated “Sayaw, Padyak, Indak” as the theme for this year’s Photography Competition.

Eligibility

  • The contest is open to both amateur and professional photographers.
  • Photos must have been taken during the competition period, and should not have won nor have been published in any book or photography magazine.
  • Participants may use any digital or film-based camera. Entries must be printed in full colour on any brand of photo paper in 8R size (8 inches x 10 inches)
  • Manually retouched and/or painted over print outputs are not allowed.
  • Creative effects done within the camera at the time of exposure e.g. multiple exposures, flash fill, lighting, filtration, etc. are allowed.
  • Digital retouching on density, contrast adjustments, minor cropping, burning, and dodging may be tolerated, although major manipulation of main images through adding or subtracting are not allowed.

Submission of Entries

Each entry should be submitted in an envelope with an Aliwan Fiesta Photo Competition entry form in triplicate (one copy attached to the photograph, one for the receiving staff, and one copy for the photographer-entrant).

The name of the contest participant should not appear on the face of the entry.

Entries should be submitted to Eloi Baltazar at the Manila Broadcasting Company office, Sotto Street, CCP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City.

Deadline for submission of entries is on May 16 2008 at 5 p.m. - MBC office

Prizes at Stake

  • First Prize P50,000
  • Second Prize P25,000
  • Third Prize P10,000

All entries become the property of MBC, which will have the right to reproduce, exhibit, or publish the images for promotional purposes, indicating/acknowledging the photographer. MBC may display the prints in a public venue, or publish them for the purpose of promoting Aliwan Fiesta, without any financial compensation to the photographers.

There will be no pre-registration of photographers. Only the actual entries in photo form will require registration.

The streetdance competition will be held in front of the Aliw Theater beginning at 6:30 p.m. The judges’ stage will be adjacent to the CCP side, so the groups’ movements will favor the judges’ view of the proceedings. I suggest you get a good vantage point early because we expect about 15,000 people in the area.

The parade actually starts at Quirino Grandstand at 4:30 p.m. and will traverse Roxas Boulevard, but it will simply be a mass parade — the main routines will be in front of Aliw.
