San Pedro Cutud Lenten Rites - Flagellations in Pampanga

San Pedro Cutud, Pampanga celebrates its lenten rites thru Holy Week re-enactment of Christ’s Passion and Death. It includes a passion play culminating with the actual atop the makeshift Calvary.We decided to take a road trip to Cutud, Pampanga and here was what we saw.. this post will be dedicated to the flagellations the next post will be dedicated to the crucifixion and re-enactment.Cutud Pampamga PhotosGetting too close can give you blood all over your shirt and gear!Photographers tip: Wear Long sleeves and make sure you are wrapped up pretty well.. cover up all your open wounds to avoid contamination from blood flying all over.. some cars that got too close came out spotted with blood..Crucifixions and Flagellations in PampangaEvery year on Good Friday or the Friday before Easter a dozen or so penitents - mostly men but with the occasional woman - are taken to a rice field in the barrio of San Pedro Cutud, 3km from the proper of City of San Fernando, Pampanga and nailed to a cross using two-inch  stainless steel nails that have been soaked in alcohol to disinfect them. The penitents are taken down when they feel cleansed of their sin. Other penitents flagellate themselves using bamboo sticks tied to a rope.Flagellation during holyweek in pampangaPhotographers tip: Stay hydrated at all times. you will probably be under the intense summer sun from 10am-4pm.
