Comparison between a Nikon D80 vs D60 vs D40 – Which one should you buy?

March 4, 2008 by admin

Off hand, If someone were to ask me which camera to buy, I would suggest the following cameras for Beginners or people in the market for a new SLR.

Nikon D80 – For the Serious Hobbyist the needs the heft and bulk of the D80.

Nikon D60 – For the new kid on the block (going with new technology and features)

Nikon D40x – For the Budget and Quality conscious newbie that wants good quality photos.

Compare Nikon D80 vs D60 vs D40

Comparison between Nikon D80 vs Nikon D60 vs Nikon D40

Both D60 and D40 wont Autofocus with non AF-S Lenses… The D80 can focus on none AFS lenses but all units can still use Manual lenses.

The D80 is a mini D200 and the D60 seems like an upgraded D40..

For the Budget conscious the D40 wins hands down.

The Low light, high ISO winners are the D40 and the D60.

The D80 has 11 focusing points while both D40 and D60 just have 3.

The D60 is the only one that has the dust removal feature.

Only the D80 and The D60 have white balance bracketing.

The D60 has an improved LCD

The D60 has auto LCD rotation

The D60 has stop motion movie (frame rate and image size can be selected)

The D60 has active D-lighting

According to the Nikon Brochure only the D60 and D40 dSD-HC compatible -?

The D80 is the only one with grid lines on demand.

The D80 has the heft and Bulk of a camera that can be taken outdoors.

The Ergonomics on all cameras are great!

We can go on and on with the differences but I think the main differences would be for the intended use.

A major factor that people also tend to overloook is that, they need to feel and touch the camera and make sure it feels right in their hands. I have met a few photographers that have bought cameras based on specifications but once they use it, and they dont “feel” or like it… they just let it go even at a loss. The camera has to feel right in your hands. Especially if you are going to use it often.. bad ergonomics can lead to wrist or hand strain.

If I were to chose a camera from the list above, I would go for the Nikon D60.. i would place my money on Technology.. my answer is based on experience.. having used several nikon cameras already inlcluding a d70, d40, d2x, d200, d300 and even half breeds like the Fuji S1 and S2..

always remember its not the price or model of the camera that makes you good.. its your eye and talent and the camera is only a tool to capture the image. Dont be a gear head! Be a photographer!

Personally, I’d go for the D40.

Looks pretty cheap here in the UK.

    Only £280.

If it were only between the D80 and the D40x… I’d go for the D40x. But with the arrival of D60… I’d go with D60 esp since there is only a small difference in price and that the D60 kit already is using the 18-55 kit lens with VR ;-)

  6. edimer on May 26th, 2008 5:54 pm

hey how much does a D60 kit in Hidalgo?

  7. Mark on May 27th, 2008 1:52 pm

    Hi Edimer,

I just bought mine over the weekend at 30K at Henry’s, with 2gb and a neat bag.. so far, so great!

  8. Administrator on May 27th, 2008 4:51 pm

I think aperture Trading is selling at 29k.. check them out..
    http://www.aperturetrading.com

  9. Mark on May 27th, 2008 5:17 pm

Yeah, they’re selling it at 29.5k over the weekend so no wonder if they dropped the .5 3days later ;-) , but it’s only got 6mos. warranty vs. Henry’s 1yr. (unless you can negotiate)

  10. edimer on May 28th, 2008 1:15 pm

my officemate friend is offering me a D40x worth 24K brand new… is it a good deal? im just starting to explore the world of photography (im a frustrated photographer lols) is D40X a good camera for me?

  11. edimer on May 28th, 2008 1:19 pm

and by the way, for a beginner like me which one camera is best for me D40 or D40X i love taking photos in events and sumtimes i travel

  12. Administrator on May 28th, 2008 3:26 pm

    edimer,

if you can lower it a bit i think it would be a better deal for you since the d60 is just 29k…

whichever you choose, am sure you will enjoy… there isnt really a big jump from the d40 to the d60..

am not sure if there are any d40 cameras in the market.. even the d40x is hard to find..

  13. edimer on May 29th, 2008 1:41 pm

yeah its true, i think the D40X and D40 are hard to find now… i dont know if its still available in hidalgo. i’m planning to go there after work today… i’ve been contacting stores asking for available D40 or D40X but unfortunately they offered me D60 :(

    hello! i’m planning to buy a slr…choosing between the d80 & d60. what do u think is d best?

  16. thomasc93 on June 29th, 2008 7:30 am

    to wannabephotog:
If you had the money, i pop in a few extra bucks and go for the d80 simply because of the autofocus motor already in the camera

  17. blue_box on June 30th, 2008 12:20 am

wow, lately i’ve been thinking alot about choose between d80 or d60, this topic is very helpful. thank you :D

  18. julesmaynite on July 1st, 2008 5:21 pm

ello! my recent visit at henry in hidalgo, nikon d60 costs 29k

  19. syndic8 on July 2nd, 2008 5:06 pm

i bought my D60 last month at 32K, i suggest grab that 29k in hidalgo. best buy.

  20. bogart on July 8th, 2008 2:55 pm

If I remember it right, D60 has a live view which the D80 does not have. Based from specification, D60 is better than D80 however I’m just wondering why in most of the reviews the rating of D60 is lower than D40 and D80.

But I believe that those who own a D60 can best rate D60. So owners please give me your opinion on the matter.

  21. syndic8 on July 14th, 2008 12:30 pm

D60 has no live view, unlike its competitor canon 450D. I think thats the reason why D60 rated that low, although the cleaning system added new a feature and 10.2 mega pixel sensitivity.

For DSLR beginners like me, liveview doesn’t matter to me right now.Technically, the viewfinder would stil be the best way to learn good photos.

How much does a NikonD40 body and 18-55mm lens cost in Hidlago?….Is NikonD40 the best dslr for newbies???I want to get the best deal out of my money but I don’t want to compromise quality…

  46. jepprok on September 6th, 2008 12:59 pm

to snowflake_iya, if i were you, settle for D60. kasi konti lng diperensya sa price(sure qaulity kapa) and D60 equipped with some of D80’s innovations.

  47. observer on September 9th, 2008 3:55 pm

if ever il buy to hongkong d80 how much will it cost?? pls help

  48. Administrator on September 10th, 2008 7:04 am

not sure how much is it in hongkong now, but you have to consider that if you buy and in hongkong and take it to the philippines or any other country outside hongkong, you camera will be considered a gray unit and it will lose its warranty.

if price consideration or difference isnt that much, consider getting it locally so you can claim warranty against any defects.

I just purchased a d60 yesterday. Didnt do my homework…!!! i actually prefer a dslr with a live view. If anyone is interested i am selling nikon d60 one day old for 25T call 9394939

  51. dycz on September 15th, 2008 2:02 am

So far, based on my walkthrough sa photography website, communicating with the buyers and emailing the stores in hidalgo for the past 3 days (Dun lang ako nagkaroon ng interest sa DSLR – Camera phones lang ako dati) ang mga tinaguriang presyo ay itey:

Brand New includes the kit lens, 2gb sd card and a bag.

    D40 BNEW Kit-18-22K
    D40 S-Hand (Body Only)- 15-17K

    D40x BNEW Kit-20-24K
    D40x S-Hand (Body Only)- 16-18K

    D60 BNEW kit -26k
    D60 S-Hand (Body Only) – 17-23K

    D80 BNEW – 40k
    D80 S-Hand (Body only) – 23.5-30K

Take note that the prices listed are the best prices I have encountered. Dahil sa paghahanap ng DSLR ay bumagal ang trabaho ko. hehe… As of now, im still deciding between D60 and D80. Anyway, I have a budget for both, but its the right size camera for me that I want. I want to feel comfortable when using it. i dont care if D60 have lens limitation, but i do think it has great technology than d80. However, on the other side, D80 is a monster. A good Body investment for different kinds of Nikon and 3rd party lenses.

Tip: Set your budget first. Then choose a camera. All DSLRs are great. kahit na d40, d40x, d60 or d80 yan.. These DLSRs were built to satisfy our hunger for great pictures. Pero as time passes by, and as we grow and learn the different do’s,no’s,and must have’s in the photography world – we crave for more; then this is the time for you to decide which among the rest will satisfy your need as an experienced user of DSLR.

As of now, be wise in choosing (applies not only in DSLR.. hehe..). Don’t let others decide for you. You can accept pieces of advice but remember don’t look back and ask “ok ba to?”. Feel the DSLR, point and shoot it and ofcourse, take a look at the price.. baka out of budget na yan.

Dapat ung pasok lang sa budget. Tandaan, lahat maganda yan. I promise.

  52. dycz on September 15th, 2008 2:37 am

Another thing is deadline ko na bukas at 2:30 na. diko pa tapos.. at bakit pako nagsusulat dito. naaddict na talaga ko sa DSLR.

Any way, this coming weekend i’ll be shop hopping in hidalgo. kelangan ko ng kasama para mas safe pag bumili. kaya kung sino ang gustong sumama, email me: yeerz77@yahoo.com . sabay tayo bumili. hehe.. i’ll be buying most likely ay used d60 or d80 camera kung hindi pumayag ung offer sakin na pababain nya ng hanggang 18K ung body lang. it will be a good trip. kikilalanin natin ung mga sellers para makakuha tayo ng discount sa next purchase natin. and one of the important things, bago ka bumili sa hidalgo, wag ka muna magdala ng cash unless marami kayo. makipagcoordinate ka muna sa buyer at baka pede nyang ipadeliver sa inyo ung camera para mas safe dba? I heard din na meron namang malapit na ATM sa isang shops doon. so, if your interested na sumama, join kana. wag kang magalala, di ako masamang tao. hehe..

    Hi!
I recently bought a d60 and have been using the kit lens since. (kit lens is 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) Now I plan on getting a better zoom lens. What lens should I use or what lens would be compatible with a d60? I’m thinking one that can zoom up to 200mm. I also hope it would be a faster. (probably with f/2.8?) I plan to use it for portraits and macro.

  64. Ralph on January 30th, 2009 7:21 am

I have a D40 (not D40x) and love it. It does everything I want, except for sensor cleaning. I have a 60mm AFS Macro on it and that is all I use, I get excellent images, printed up to 20″ x 30″. (And it does great on portraits too.) I thought about the D60 so that I could get automatic sensor cleaning, but since I never take the lens off, I really don’t have the need to upgrade. Read the reviews of the D40 and D60 at http://www.kenrockwell.com. Yeah, I sometimes miss shots because I don’t have a longer telephoto, or wide angle, but you learn to live with what you have. After all, the great photographers of the past got by with only 50mm lenses…

  65. jan gonzales on February 13th, 2009 3:42 pm

i agree with ralph and ken rockwell (try to check out kenrockwell.com).
d40, d40x or d60? – d40 is the way to go. unless you’re a pro who needs all the features of a high end d/slr. just stick to a d40 and spend your extra cash on important add ons like lenses, filters, a flash, a tripod, a quality bag, acc’s etc…
instead of spending 26 to 40k for a d60 or d80, i think the better budget wise option is to get a d40 kit plus a 55-200mm vr lens. or if you’re up to it, why not a 18-200mm vr (so you really wouldn’t have to take the lens off, thus eliminating the need for automatic sensor cleaning)…
ralph says “learn to live with what you have”,,,
i’d add “maximize and get the most out of your budget”
    just my two cents

Cath, I suggest you buy sa hidalgo.. like sa mayers.. kasi pare parehas lang ang presyo sa hidalgo unless suki ka sa isang shop. unity kasi mga shops dun kaya di sila ngaaway-away sa presyo… ayos don, have it deliver to your house or office and pede mong macheck ung unit.

Kung beginner lang sa photography and wala maxado budget, mas maganda na mag D40 instead of D60. Almost same features yun nga lang D60 has 10MP. High megapixel nman is used if you’ll be printing it at a large size.. You can save money if you det to choose D40, then buy lens or Speedlight for yourself. Then, if you have budget naman, go for D80, pangmatagalan na gamit na yan, you’ll enjoy its features na wala sa D40/60. also, in the long run, malaki pa din matitipid mo sa D80 since cheaper ang prices ng lens na wlang Built-in-motor… Also makapag-wireless trigger ka sa D80.. Enjoi!
