8 reasons to buy a Nikon D40 or D40x instead of a Point and Shoot
1. Clean files, Less Noise and overall better quality that can shoot raw files!
2. More Creative control of the camera and and multiple combinations of adjustments to match your creative mood.
3. Bigger Sensor means better image quality, better detail, color depth and dynamic range.
4. Accessories, Accessories you will have an array of choice from lenses, filters, extension tubes, flashes, brackets, tripods, and specialty products like the lensbabies.
5. Fast Startup and response time. take photos at will and no shutte lag problems just like point and shoot.
6. Ergonomics and styling are made to fit well into your hand. Strain is minimal on long shooting trips.
7. Viewfinder helps you compose shots thru your lens and lets you capture what you see.
8. Price, price, price - The D40 is probably the cheapest, most affordable and most functional DLSR in the local market today. The file quality at high iso can even beat the high end DSLR like the Nikon D2x.
D40 is cheaper than a highend Point and shoot and will probably out live the point and shoot!
D40 price is around 23k brand new.. if you lucky you can get it cheaper.. the D40x should go for around 27-30k brand new..

Hi Anton. Right on!
I looove my D40. I just wish I have more time playing with it.
Re: Zone V. SOON, I hope. I just need to get my stuff together, I still have a lot of things to learn and you guys are MASTERS already!! But.. SOON.
nice list of reasons
Have you been able to play around with the nikon P5100?
Riz,
ill ask Shiela to contact you for our January Meeting.
Mark,
havent tried the nikon p5100, i have to admit am biased to DSLRs because of the ability to change lenses and the sensor size is bigger, APC instead of APS sized sensor.
The nikon p5100 uses a 1/1.72″ Type CCD while the Nikon D40 uses a 23.7 x 15.5 mm (Nikon DX) giving it more real estate. What this means is that it can capture more detail and files can be enlarged bigger without breaking out pixelized.
Also the D40 can shoot RAW and JPG while the P5100 can also take jpeg and AVI.
Which one do you like?
i’d still probably go with the p5100. i’ve seen actual samples of p5000’s shots taken at the highest iso settings and the image didn’t have lot of noise at all. I also think that the p5100’s 12mp would be more than enough for the usual printing output may it be enlarged or not. it is also smaller than the d40/d40x ü and the underwater casing for the p5xxx series is way cheaper hehehe.
but at the end of the day… it all boils down to one’s preference, shooting habits and affordability and the reasons you listed are stil very compelling esp to those who’d want to enter the world of DSLRs.
btw, you still haven’t emailed me your world photo directory banner
yup preference, shooting style and budget are major factors to consider.
the underwater casing sounds interesting! let me know if you get one.
the banner.. hmm hehehe will send it to you soon..
really d40 is only 23k???!! cmon! you must be kidding me?? yeah maybe its 23k on other country.. hay, i should have been bought that instead of my sony cybbershot..
pips,
if you buy in hidalgo you will get good prices.
yes i bought a D40 for php23k here in Manila.. you can even get some slighty used ones for 18k
pips,
just to add there are the regular priced ones and there is the gray market units the ones without warranty.. the unit i got has only the store warranty meaning if anything goes wrong i bring it back to them…
why did i get it even without warranty? bec i believe in the brand and the camera for me is a specific use camera for events and late night shoots because of the clean high iso files.. which i dont use much and dont use it for commercial use. (meaning paid shoots)
im planning to buy a d40 too.. is d40 still available in the market???
Thanks for posting this! Just exactly what I needed to get my dad to buy me one. Thanks soooo much.
which is best dslr camera to used : the nikon d40x or the canon 400d. thank you!!!!
