Entry form and brief
1. INTRODUCTION
Clothes Show Live is back for 2007 looking to build on last year’s huge success, once again, bringing the largest fashion and beauty event to the NEC in Birmingham between 7th and 12th December 2007.
To reinforce Clothes Show Live’s dedication to fashion and style, and to support young fashion talent, Clothes Show Live once again introduces the Educational Bursary Young Fashion Photographer of the Year Competition in association with Nikon. Entrants are invited to send in photographs and a display of the work will then be mounted at the show.
THE BRIEF: COOL BRITANNIA
“Cool Britannia†was a term coined to sum up the mood in Britain during the late 1990s. The era was closely associated with the fashionable London scene, the Britpop music movement, fashion designers like Alexander McQueen, ‘Brit Art’ led by young British artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, plus the rise of lads magazines including Loaded and FHM. It was also closely linked with the early years of the New Labour government of Tony Blair, ‘Cool Britannia ‘being a pun on the title of the patriotic song ‘Rule Britannia’.
During the Britpop movement there was a sudden influx of lively British rock and pop music from bands such as Oasis, Blur, Suede, Supergrass, Pulp, The Verve and The Spice Girls. The popularity of the Austin Powers films and the resurgence of 007 were also considered influencing factors. The movement saw a renewal in British pride, typified by such things as Noel Gallagher’s Union Jack guitar and Geri Halliwell’s iconic skimpy Union Jack dress which promoted the UK to a world audience.
Now Clothes Show Live 2007 and Nikon are giving budding fashion photographers an opportunity to revisit this notorious era and demonstrate what ‘Cool Britannia’ means to you now, in the new Millennium, with the second ever Young Fashion Photographer of the Year competition.
Entrants must use their imagination and photographic skills to capture their vision of ‘Cool Britannia’ today. To enter simply submit one shot that epitomizes ‘Cool Britannia’ in 2007, describing in detail how you came to create the shot and a detailed explanation of your entry.
