Camera Buying Guide: Nikon D40 vs Nikon D40x vs Canon G7
Ive been wanting to purchase a point and shoot camera but am in dilemma of choosing which camera to buy.
Why do i need a smaller camera? Because whenever i bring out the nikon D2X or the D200, it seems to send out automatic alarms to guards or security conscious people that am taking a picture of something and as everyone knows, we filipinos are not allowed to take photos anywhere without “permits” and that only foreigners are given the opportunity to enjoy our country and its beauty… Ok enough of the bitching… that post will come soon…
Can anyone help me?
here are some facts that ive put together to figure out which camera to get.

Hands down the Nikon Cameras have an edge.. especially that they are good in low light situations, even better than the D2X, D200 and the D80. the Only drawback is that these cameras prefer Type G Lenses of Nikon lenses… meaning you can use your prime lenses on Autofocus.. its back to the manual system for you!
Its been a few weeks since ive debated on getting a small DSLR instead of a point and shoot camera.. being so much cheaper with more flexibility is a big plus for me, especially that you can shoot RAW. Since the time I started thinking of getting one, the prices have dropped a bit.. the Nikon D40 body started out Php 30k ++ now its down to 22,000.00.. hmm do you think if i wait long enough the prices will go even lower?
Might be a good idea to wait a litte bit more to see how far the prices drop.. all i needed was a point and shoot for those spur of the moment thingies… so i dont have to bring out the beastly DSLRs out of the box and catch the attention of those Security Guards who think that is a crime to enjoy and take photographs of our modern scenery in Makati…. Waiting a bit longer can bring the D40x closer to the price range of the D40… which makes it a good buy.. and DSLR prices go down faster than their point and shoot counterparts…
What do you guys think? is it a good buy? was also looking at the Leica vs. Panasonic cameras but the APS sensor is what is stopping me from getting a point and shoot.. I did like the Samsung but still it is an APS sensor I will be dealing with.. high noise on enlargements and quality isnt as good as using real glass of those DSLRs… some may argue that it is a tool.. but lets be realistic.. enlarging photos and seeing them at 100% will show you the real difference of point and shoot cameras agaisnt DSLRs..
I think I should stop thinking about it and just buy one and enjoy shooting.. :p

In your comparison matrix you show the D40x ISO starting at 200; it’s 100.

hi,
have you got your new camera?, what is it?. I can say that Nikon is very good in terms of indurance, we have captured of ~400K of pictures from d80, and it still is kicking.
I am planning to get the smaller d40, but I have not found one here in cebu.

@jed, yes you can save a lot (thousands) of photos on your Computer’s Hard drive, and I suggest you get a DVD writer / CD Writer to back them up.

I bought the D40 outfit at amazon.com last Feb.
It cost me $630 which I should say is not that bad considering that it came with 2 lenses.
The D60 came out last march and that was reason enough to drop the price for the D40.
As for the D40x, only consider buying it you need big printouts.
