“Pintakasi” Photo Contest: Cockpits and breeding farms, open to the strong-hearted photographers
“Pintakasi” Photo Contest
March 10 - June 30, 2007
Venue: Cockpits and breeding farms all over the Philippines.
Subject: Capture the faces of the typical “Sabungero”, the fighting
cocks with flashing metal spurs, the scenario where bets are called by
hand signals, the “sentenciador” who declares the winners, the “ulot”
session where roosters are matched, the “surgeon” who stitches the
gaping wounds of the winning cocks without anesthesia or scenes from
breeding farms where hundreds of roosters are trained to fight. The
shouts, the colorful feathers flying in the air, the combat that lasts
for a few seconds and the maddening hysteria that follows each fight -
these are only a few of the images that can be captured by the camera.
Note: This contest shall be open only to the strong-hearted
photographers who want to have a taste of shooting actual cockfights.
This is a real Filipino tradition that dates back to the pre-Spanish era
but is still so much part of our lives. It is a gentleman’s sport where
well-known personalities, big names in business, entertainment, sports
and politics are often seen in the cockpits on Sundays. It is also a
multi-billion industry where giant corporations like San Miguel is a
major player.
Like our great artists in the past who have painted the cockfights on
their canvasses, you may find the joy in capturing images of an event
that could be disturbing to some, yet gratifying to you.
Join the contest and experience a colorful tradition - the cockpit-
where deals even without contracts are honored.
The contest WILL NOT be included in the monthly OTS or themes of the
Photoworld Cup.
If plans push through, the winning images will be exhibited in time for
a coffee table book launch.
